When I listened to other photographers, I realized...

This year, I have fully embraced an educational mindset. Like a sponge, I am actively listening, learning, and observing. This journey has been incredibly enriching. I have acquired extensive knowledge about photography and photographers, covering technical aspects such as equipment, software, and marketing, as well as customer service. Additionally, I have gained valuable insights into how photographers perceive the world and their craft. This experience has transformed my appreciation for this art form, particularly in relation to the interesting issue of age.

Having already passed the age of 40, I reflect on how I felt when I reached that milestone. My focus then, as it is now, is on discovering new opportunities and enhancing my happiness. It's vital to challenge the misconception that life declines after 40. At any age, it's important to find ways to stay productive and creative while also enjoying life. Do I feel more tired? Not really. I simply want to take the time to appreciate every moment, which is why I adopt a slower pace. Can I do a marathon wedding? Yes, I can! Do I want to? Nah…

This year, my conversations with younger photographers from around the world have significantly strengthened my appreciation for the power of perspective. Each interaction has revealed the unique insights they bring to the table, highlighting how diverse viewpoints enrich our understanding and creativity in photography. Perspective serves as both an invaluable ally and a potential distortion of our perception of reality.

As the Spanish saying goes, “Nadie sabe lo que hay en la olla, solo la cuchara que la menea” (nobody knows what is in the pot except the spoon that stirs it). I found their discussions about age particularly amusing, especially their interpretations of what turning 40 looks like. I actively listened and observed as they crafted their vision of life at 40, and it was clear that their youthful imaginations sparked invaluable lessons.

I’ve been reflecting on what life feels like for me after turning 40. With two young adult kids, a playful dog, and ‘da husband by my side, I’ve gained a unique perspective. It’s important to acknowledge that life isn’t always perfect, but it’s how we respond to the challenges that truly shape our experiences. I understand that many of us face our own struggles, and it’s the way we take each punch that defines our journey together.

Photographer perspective on aging and business. What is important now? Karen Fabiola Photo

At my age, I navigate life with a constructive and realistic mindset. For example, I choose to set aside fleeting trends and the distractions of social media, recognizing their potential impact in creating unnecessary stress and misrepresenting the aging process. Instead, I focus on what truly matters, empowering myself to appreciate this journey with clarity and confidence.

I see social media as a powerful tool, yet I am committed to not allowing it to take over my time and energy.

I actively seek personal and authentic methods—this blog serves that purpose! I explore new strategies to achieve my objectives while prioritizing meaningful connections that contribute to my growth and fulfillment.

Did I use “I” too often in this post? :) Well, at this stage in my life, embracing “I” can be a liberating way to love yourself and conduct business authentically. "I" can represent you, envisioning your 40s in a different light because it is possible. The key is to be prepared for it. I firmly believe that words, visualization, and the way we speak to ourselves are powerful tools for achieving our goals and happiness.

I feel incredibly fortunate to be at this exciting stage of life, where each day brings new opportunities to explore and grow. With a strong sense of health and vitality, I wish my younger photographer friends could see that life can be exhilarating at any age. Balancing the demands of business with a vision for the future is crucial—envisioning ourselves at 40, 50, or 60, fully embracing a life rich with adventures and experiences. Whether discovering new places, connecting with inspiring individuals, or pursuing long-held dreams, the world is brimming with incredible possibilities. I’m excited to embrace all that this promising future has to offer! What about you?

Ready to enjoy life at any age? 4o is not the end of it! Photographers and age
